Top 10 priorities for menopause research
Prof Martha Hickey BA (Hons); MSc (Clin Psych); MBChB, FRCOG, FRANZCOG, MD
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Melbourne, Director of the Gynaecology Research Centre, The Women’s Hospital
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne and an NHMRC Leadership (L2) Fellow. Her main clinical and research interests are in menopause. In her clinical practice she leads Australia’s largest menopause service and established the first multidisciplinary service for managing menopause after cancer, now replicated internationally. She is an enthusiastic proponent of evidence based medicine, and an Editor for the Cochrane Collaboration. She is the Clinical Expert for the 2024 UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines in menopause. She led the first Lancet Clinical Series in Menopause, published in 2024. To ensure women’s voices are heard in menopause research she led the development of the first Core Outcome Set in menopause research and the global Menopause Priority Setting Partners (MAPS) to set a new, patient-focused research agenda. She works closely with artists to challenge negative views of ageing in women including the Flesh after Fifty (https://www.fleshafterfifty.com/) arts and health project aiming to challenge and change this narrative using positive images and stories. Flesh after Fifty has been viewed by over 50,000 people and is still touring.

Mental Health and Menopause
Dr Tania Perich (B Psych Hons. PGDipSocHlth, PhD) is an Associate Professor School of Psychology, Western Sydney University, Sydney Australia and a Registered Psychologist. Tania works in research primarily in the treatment and psychological management of bipolar disorder and depression. She also has a focus has been on the impact of hormonal events on women with bipolar disorder and in particular menopause.

Making Menopause Matter: The GP's role in midlife women's health
Dr Marita Long is a Victorian based GP working across clinical practice, medical education and research. She is an academic in the Department of General Practice and Primary Care at the University of Melbourne and holds an adjunct Clinical Associate Professorship with the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. She has recently joined Dementia Australia as the first GP Honorary Medical Advisor.
While she enjoys the breadth of general practice, she has a strong interest in women’s health and has completed a Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health. Her passion for dementia has grown through the intersection of women’s health, preventative health and chronic disease management. She tries to work to support her patients to extend their health span not just their life span.
She is a current committee member for the Australian Society of Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a member of the WIGP RACGP committee and is the current Vic/Tas representative on the Board of the Australasian Menopause Society.
